Lick Observatory

Since its founding in 1888, Lick Observatory has been at the forefront of astronomical discovery, providing UC astronomers with access to world-class optical and infrared observing equipment. As a multi-campus research unit operated by the University of California, Lick is a central component of the University of California Observatories (UCO), headquartered at UC Santa Cruz, and continues to advance the frontiers of astronomical research. Established through the bequest of James Lick, real estate entrepreneur and a visionary patron of science, the observatory has a long history of breakthrough discoveries that shape our understanding of the universe.

Today, Lick Observatory combines modern telescopes with innovative high-tech cameras and instruments to study phenomena ranging from distant galaxies to nearby planetary systems. Its research programs explore some of the most pressing questions in astrophysics, providing critical insights into the origins and evolution of stars, planets, and galaxies. Beyond research, Lick is dedicated to training the next generation of astronomers through hands-on learning and mentorship, preparing students to contribute to the global scientific community.

Public education is another cornerstone of Lick’s mission. The Visitor Center showcases the observatory’s scientific achievements, technological innovations, and rich history, offering visitors a window into the process of astronomical discovery. Through its research, educational programs, and outreach, Lick Observatory continues to illuminate the cosmos while inspiring curiosity and understanding for both students and the public alike.
