The Science Communication Program at UC Santa Cruz trains the next generation of professional science writers—curious, creative communicators who bring scientific discovery to life for audiences everywhere. Since its founding in 1981, the program has earned a national reputation for excellence, preparing students to translate complex research into compelling stories that inform and inspire.
Designed for scientists who are as passionate about explaining science as they are about doing it, this one-year graduate program provides intensive, hands-on training through coursework and professional internships. It is the only program in the nation that requires a background in science and research experience, ensuring that graduates are skilled at bridging the worlds of science and storytelling.
With a network of more than 350 alumni, graduates of the program work as reporters and editors at leading science publications, digital news platforms, universities, research agencies, and medical centers. Many also thrive as independent writers, exploring topics that spark their curiosity and reaching global audiences.
