Cowell College
As UC Santa Cruz’s first residential college, Cowell College is home to a distinguished alumni network dating back to 1967 and is renowned for its sweeping views of the Monterey Bay. Through continued philanthropic support, Cowell upholds its enduring legacy and remains guided by its founding motto: ‘The pursuit of truth in the company of friends.’
Thanks to the generosity of donors over the years, Cowell College benefits from 23 endowments—an extraordinary foundation of support that continues to sustain and enrich programs throughout the college.
“Cowell College helps students develop the skills and perspectives they need to become effective, thoughtful members of a civic society.”
—Alan Christy, Cowell College Provost (2016-2025)
Scholarships and other opportunities
Cowell College is committed to providing support to students whenever it’s needed—whether for textbooks, unexpected expenses, or other forms of assistance. Students receive the help they need to succeed, and many choose to give back to these funds when they are able, ensuring that future generations of Cowell students can access the same vital support.
A hidden gem with lasting impact: Supporting the Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery
Tucked just beyond the Cowell/Stevenson dining hall, the Eloise Pickard Smith Gallery is one of Cowell College’s hidden treasures. Named in honor of the former chair of the California Council of the Arts and wife of Cowell’s founding provost, the gallery has been a part of Cowell’s identity since its earliest days.
While the gallery is among Cowell’s crowning jewels, its quiet location means it remains unfamiliar to many. Cowell College seeks to change that, with a vision to make the space a vibrant hub for both students and the greater Santa Cruz community. With donor support, the gallery can host public events, become more accessible, and secure a full-time, salaried director.
