Chancellor's Message

Dear Friends of UC Santa Cruz,

As summer approaches, you feel a certain energy in the air at UC Santa Cruz.

I'm sure it has something to do with our undergraduate and graduate-level scholars putting on their caps and gowns and getting ready to take on the world.

But I'm also sensing a new kind of confidence and enthusiasm, an excitement coursing through the entire campus.

Part of that feeling of anticipation comes from the approaching 50th anniversary of UCSC in 2015.

And part of that feeling comes from the kick-off, just a few months ago, of the public phase of our first comprehensive fundraising campaign, an ambitious effort to generate $300 million to support students, research, academic programs, and campus facilities.

I got a strong sense of that excitement at our recent event, "Launch! A celebration of the UCSC Student Experience." There was, as they say, not a dry eye in the house when Helen Porter (Kresge, '14, history) spoke to the crowd from the podium that night.

Helen is co-director of the Gail Project, a collaborative social history effort charting the relationship between the United States and Okinawa. She told our guests that UCSC wasn't her first choice of college—we were, frankly, the only campus that offered her enough financial aid to attend. But her involvement in the Gail Project and other programs at UCSC has changed her life. She would not have had any of these opportunities if not for generous donors who made possible the scholarships and awards she received.

So far, more than 40,000 people have stepped up to give, including you. In doing so, you are helping UCSC students like Helen Porter do what they do best: Inquire, investigate, research, understand. Students at UCSC are acquiring the skills to meet the challenges of the world head-on.

The campaign's theme, "GIVE: Don't Give In," is more than a catchy phrase, and far more than a reverential nod to our origins in the 1960s.

It is a mission statement for the next 50 years and beyond. Welcome to the future. Thanks for helping us play a leading role in it.
