Case For Support

UCSC has a student body that is 18,000 strong. Yet, most classes offer one-on-one experiences with professors and researchers and small community living and learning environments through the university's college system.

Students

At UC Santa Cruz, access to public education for all qualified students is a top priority, regardless of their ability to pay. In fact,

  • More than one-third of our newest students are the first in their family to attend college.
  • More than half of our incoming students are from minority families.
  • Low-income families account for more than 30 percent of all incoming freshmen.
  • Even students who aren’t from low-income households seek financial help to underwrite the nearly $25,000 it costs to attend school and live in Santa Cruz annually. In fact, 70 percent of all students attending UCSC receive some kind of financial support from the school.
Undergraduate Victor Hernandez

Scholarships

UCSC believes in students like Victor Hernandez, who put off college to work. Winner of the Karl F. Pister Scholarship, Victor returned to UCSC to get his undergraduate degree in psychology “to work with people who have been totally forgotten. It’s an anonymous job, but if you reach just a few people, you can play a part in changing the face of civilization.”

When Victor came to UCSC, he had already had a 25-year Silicon Valley career in hardware testing, signal acquisition and processing, and biotechnology. When Victor discovered that he was learning disabled, he returned to school to learn how to help others with learning disabilities. After he receives his bachelors’ degree at UCSC, he’ll pursue a Ph.D. in clinical psychology or forensics and, ultimately, combine his newly gained learning in psychology with his engineering background to create adaptive technologies for people who are learning disabled.

Graduate Student Yvonne Rodriquez

Fellowships

UCSC Fellowships support students like Yvonne Rodriguez. Retired from the US Air Force, Yvonne returned to school after a career in the military to pursue her doctoral degree in physics. She was so impressed with the faculty at UCSC, it was the only graduate school she applied to. Yvonne is supported by several campus fellowships.

Endowments

Endowments provide support for future generations of California students. Through carefully managed endowment funds, research, faculty recruitment and retention, and tuition support for talented, deserving students can always be a priority for UCSC.

Support

A gift to UCSC is tax deductible. Giving circles are available for donors who are interested in more contact with the movers, shakers, and innovators at UCSC.
