UCSC Social Sciences Professor Craig Haney researches and teaches the application of social psychological principles and data to legal and civil rights issues, including the psychological effects of incarceration, criminogenic social histories, the role of pre-trial publicity in creating juror prejudice and pre-judgment, the structure of criminal justice attitudes, and the mechanisms that underlie discriminatory legal decision making.
Chairs make it possible for UCSC to recognize, foster, and support faculty's academic excellence. Chairs fund outstanding teaching, research, and service; and sometimes include salary or stipends for assistants or graduate students, equipment, curriculum costs, publication costs, summer activities, travel, and base-salary and/or augmentation of state-supported salary and benefits for the chair holder.
