"It has been a circle very much unbroken," said Adilah Barnes (Cowell '72) as she described the enduring personal relationships and quality education she acquired at UC Santa Cruz, which remain the inspiration for her ongoing commitment to the campus. "I had an opportunity to stretch my wings and soar. I was drawn back to the campus because I wanted to remain a part of it somehow. Nancy Bonilla was just six years old when her family moved to the U.S. from El Salvador. She recalls those first years of her childhood quite vividly, often surprising her parents with how much she remembers. These memories “influence my work, including who I am,” said Bonilla, recipient of an Eduardo Carrillo Memorial Scholarship, which is awarded to art majors who achieve high academic merit in painting, drawing, or sculpture. When UCSC Foundation trustee Barbara Canfield made a gift of stock to UCSC’s Soroptimist International of Santa Cruz Endowment this year, her generous gift tripled the value of the fund. A supporter of Shakespeare Santa Cruz and the UCSC Affiliates for many years, Canfield made her contribution of appreciated assets to support students and to incorporate her philanthropic interests into her overall investment strategy. The legacy of artist and teacher Eduardo Carrillo continues to inspire and support students thanks to the generosity of his widow, Alison Keeler Carrillo, and other donors who have established a scholarship in his memory. “The scholarship is a way for Ed’s vision and values to be carried forward,” said Alison. “He did all kinds of things that really inspired his students to take their art seriously. It was the early ‘70s, and William Chavez was editor of City on a Hill Press student newspaper and active in the California farmworker organizing efforts. “The interaction and mentorship between the faculty and the students provided tremendous influence for a young man like my brother,” his sister Olivia Chavez said. “Think of it. "We had the benefit of an incredible education at a fraction of what it truly costs to provide that education," said Moira Feingold (Cowell '72) in describing one of the reasons she and her husband, Ken (Cowell '71), support scholarships and the colleges at UC Santa Cruz. "College expenses have gone up so much, many families that could afford it in our day no longer can," adds Ken. "So by supporting scholarships, we want to encourage all those students to attend." “Sandra wanted to be a teacher,” said Elizabeth Rojo, remembering her sister’s aspirations. “She saw how hard our mother worked to put all eight of us through school and how important our education was to her. "It was very easy for me to go to college," said Lee Gilbert, a graduate of Douglass College in New Jersey. "My parents paid for it, and I lived in a dorm. "When I look back on my educational experience at UC Santa Cruz, it seems in retrospect like a golden age of opportunity and abundance," said Lisa Gimmy, (Cowell '77), who supports undergraduate scholarships through the Telephone Outreach Program. "When the student callers contact me and they're asking for donations, and they explain what they go through now and you compare it to what you were offered, your heart just goes out to them." Mark Headley didn't know it at the time, but his education at UC Santa Cruz was the perfect preparation for his career today. As president and portfolio manager of Matthews International Capital Management LLC, Headley (Stevenson '83) oversees portfolios across the Asian market that range from diversified to regional, to country and sector specific. "I had no idea there was a job called portfolio manager out there," said Headley, who majored in economics and politics, "but the work I was doing at UC Santa Cruz, comparing the economic development of countries, is exactly what I'm doing today." Ask Stephen Klein (Cowell '72) what areas of UC Santa Cruz he chooses to support, and the short answer is--many. Klein, a regional administrator for the County of Los Angeles Public Library, gives to scholarships, Cowell College, the University Library, and The Lionel Cantú Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex Resource Center. "People who have a stake in UC Santa Cruz need to step up and make that concrete. One way to do that is to give your time and another way to do that is to give your money. Her life was a remarkable journey that reached from Vietnam to the United States and back to Asia. Christy Anh-Thu Trinh-Malarney embraced a new language and culture, while never losing a strong commitment to her primary identity. Throughout her too-short journey of 36 years, there were two themes that remained constant: the importance of helping others, and the power of education. [Read complete story]

"Too many credits in too many majors." That was Kit Mura-smith’s situation when she applied to UC Santa Cruz in 1974. Recently divorced with three small children, she was ready to finish her degree and start a new life. “When you have that many units and four majors, universities don’t want you,” Mura-smith noted. “UCSC made an exception and allowed me to complete my degree in one year, with a grant and the support I needed to complete the year without working. I am grateful to UCSC for accepting me, even under the title of an ‘older re-entering woman.’ It was a challenging year in a very supportive environment.” [Read complete story]

"It's clear that the creative environment at UC Santa Cruz is what motivated me to succeed in this career," said Paul Rabwin (Cowell '70), a multiple Emmy-award nominee and Golden Globe-winning television producer. "To be able to create a scholarship for local students studying at UC Santa Cruz is something I'm very proud of," said Charles Canfield, president of the Santa Cruz Seaside Company and owner and operator of the Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk since 1984. Mary Thush, a close friend of library media specialist David Kirk, decided to name the university as the beneficiary of her estate. “Having no immediate family, I wanted to leave my estate to an educational institution like UCSC,” she said.

When Mary passed away, proceeds from her gift augmented the David Kirk Video Endowment and established the Mary E. Thush Media Center Endowment. Thush’s generosity ensures her lasting role in helping the library acquire and maintain digital media resources that offer depth, distinction, and excellence.

“I focused more on my academics,” said Charles Tolliver Jr. (Merrill ’05), describing the impact scholarship support had on his studies at UC Santa Cruz. Tolliver was the first recipient of the Eric Thomas Memorial Scholarship, an award established to celebrate the life and achievements of the late alumnus. "It was a great honor just to be selected, such a surprise and such a nice one," said Skye Vendt-Pearce, recipient of an Amy Beth Snader Memorial Scholarship. Vendt-Pearce, an electrical engineering major who expects to graduate in winter quarter 2005, used the scholarship funds to purchase a laptop.
